If I remember correctly, the first time I participated in an English corner was in college. At that time, I accidentally caught a glimpse of the activity bulletin board (or brochure) of the school club.
At that time, I was like, I should give it a shot. And there were foreign teachers. Anyways, there was no way I would fail it.
There were a lot of people, in a very large classroom, everyone sat in groups and discussed. I thought the atmosphere was good, although the foreign teacher hardly had time to pay attention to me. Well, I didn’t know the teacher’s name until I left the English corner.
At that time, I was in the same group as my classmates from the School of Foreign Languages and the School of Humanity.
Their spoken English was excellent. Some of them spoke super fast, so I couldn’t hear the words clearly. Some of them barely spoke and were excellent listeners.
In fact, I think everyone on campus is in a hurry. Either on the way to class, or on the way back to the dormitory after class, of course, there are also friends who go to the library and outside.
Anyways, everyone seems to be an independent individual, and they are rarely willing to participate in this kind of collective language activity. So that’s why I find it very admirable to see everyone expressing their opinions in high spirits. I think at least they are willing to speak their minds and take the time (it should have been Friday night) to give up their activities and participate in this speaking corner activity.
In addition to the enthusiasm of the friends, what moved me was also the performance of the foreign teacher.
In my opinion, she always answers every classmate’s question very gently, and will remind someone warmly when the classmate does not know a certain word. Like the English teachers I have met since childhood, she is very patient and very good.
Perhaps at that moment, the seeds of wanting to start my own English Corner sprang up in my heart.
I have been away from campus for a few months now, for me, the role of English Corner or similar activities is no longer to improve my English level, but more to listen to more people’s stories and learn about the world from a different perspective.
However, I still prefer to make the English corner more casual, rather than seriously academic sharing and technical sharing which I think few people will listen to. Think about the professional lectures on campus. If it is purely about some boring knowledge, how many audience will not leave the seats, hahaha.
In short, I hope to meet all kinds of people and understand their views on something, maybe the same as mine, maybe totally different from mine, I think it is a good phenomenon.
Apart from that, I will also learn to accept the diversity of this world, so that more partners can express themselves bravely, not just about language, but more about improving their own expression ability. It can be very slow, but when you have something to say, just spell it out!
